Dyemansion launches first ever vibrant color line for grey HP Multi Jet Fusion parts

CATEGORY: 3D Services BRAND: Dyemansion

For the first time, the Munich post-processing experts have developed 17 vibrant colors especially for grey HP Multi Jet Fusion parts made of Polyamide 12, opening up completely new fields of applications for additive manufactured products produced with the HP Multi Jet Fusion process. The new colors will be commercially available from July 2020 on and will be tested with selected customers in a beta program.

For several years now, users who use 3D-printed plasctics with a white base material have been benefiting from the color selection provided by DyeMansion's DeepDye Coloring process. The Munich post-processing experts offer their customers the largest color database on the market. From standard colors and color choices according to color systems such as RAL or Pantone to individual recipes for corporate colors, skin tones or colors with special properties such as Automotive ColorsX with increased light and heat resistance, there are many options.

However, for plastics with a grey base material, the color options have been very limited to black and dark shades. That changes from now on: In the past months a new color palette was developed especially for grey PA12 components produced with the HP Multi Jet Fusion process (4200/5200 series).

"The number of HP systems in the market is growing and our customers’ demand for vibrant colors for their grey parts was strong. We have taken up this challenge and now respond to the needs of the market with a new color line. We are looking forward to the first colorful products on the market and are excited to see which industry will be the forerunner here. ", says Kai Witter, Chief Customer Officer at DyeMansion.

Special recipe for vibrant colors on grey base material opens up new fields

of applications

The 17 new colors range from classic black and grey tones, through rich blue tones, to strong red tones. The new line also includes refreshing green and turquoise tones as well as a lively yellow and a vibrant pink. A previously unseen color spectrum on grey parts. This opens up completely new fields of applications for AM products made of PA12 (HP 3D HR PA 12), for example in the consumer goods sector, for orthopaedics or the automotive industry for high-value interior parts.

During the DyeMansion DeepDye Coloring process, the dyes react with the base material in a water bath under pressure and heat - in contrast to spraypainting. The dyes penetrate up to 200 μm into the open pores of the parts. Parameters such as the color of the base material or the surface treatment of the part are important factors influencing the final color. As with all DyeMansion colors, the new color line was developed with surface treatment in mind. The selected process here is mechanical PolyShot Surfacing (PSS) with the DyeMansion Powershot S. The automated, mechanical blasting process achieves a homogenization of the surface and is perfectly suited for processing hard plastics. Other surface processes such as the chemical VaporFuse Surfacing (VFS) influence the coloring result and can also be tested for the new colors in cooperation with DyeMansion directly.

To achieve these vibrant colors on a grey base material, DyeMansion developed a completely new recipe that cannot be reproduced with manual pot dyeing solutions or other coloring systems on the market. Philipp Kramer, Co-Founder & CTO of DyeMansion explains more details: "In order to achieve strong colors even on parts with grey base material with immediate effect, we have redefined our process and developed a special recipe. The handling remains easy for our customers, because no DM60 hardware or software adjustments are necessary to use the new colors. “

Beta program, webinars and availability of color samples

In order to meet the market in terms of quality for high-value end-use products, from today on a beta program with selected customers will start before the commercial launch in July 2020. The aim is to be able making concrete recommendations for optimum production parameters and post-processing steps after the program is complete. Users who own a HP Jet Fusion 4200 or 5200 system as well as a DyeMansion Powershot S and DyeMansion DM60 can now participate in the beta program.
