Adidas 4DFWD: 3D printed performance technology

CATEGORY: Fashion BRAND: Adidas

Combining years of athlete data with unique 3D printing technology, 4DFWD is born from the sports brand Adidas to provide runners with an entirely new experience

For more than four years, Adidas have developed 4D lattice midsole technology in partnership with Carbon. Combining athlete data and Carbon's Digital Light SynthesisTM technology to produce precisely fitted 3D printed midsoles.

Adidas 4D footwear is among the first in the world to utilize this cutting-edge technology that offers the ability to adjust the midsoles to specific movement patterns, so athletes can enjoy precision performance with every step.

From this process the new Adidas 4DFWD lattice midsole is born. Identified from one in five million possible lattice structures and made from 40% biological material, the bow tie shaped FWD CELL has been specifically coded to compress forward in the event of a vertical impact.

Compared to previous 4D midsole generations, Adidas 4DFWD generates three times more forward motion under vertical load under mechanical test conditions. As a result, the maximum braking force experienced by the athlete during the run is reduced by 15% as the midsole redirects these vertical impact forces into a horizontal forward motion, offering running economy comparable to that of Ultraboost midsoles under laboratory conditions.

Adidas 4DFWD has been tested through a variety of biomechanical test procedures at the University of Calgary, Canada, which looked at specific areas such as forward motion, braking force, and running economy. The concept was also extensively tested with local racers from the creation team in Germany and a carefully selected cohort of top-level race creators in the U.S. In addition, state-of-the-art cognitive perception tests were conducted at the State University of Arizona. Complementing the Adidas 4DFWD midsole is a new PRIMEKNIT upper made from recycled polyester.

Provides runners with a super lightweight premium upper that wraps the foot in a seamless sock-like fit. Historical map data has been used to code the PRIMEKNIT upper to perfectly align with the unique properties of the 4DFWD midsole. Helping to give runners all the support and comfort they need while running.

The adidas 4DFWD will launch in three specific colourways, including a special Tokyo Collection drop, which will be the main podium shoe for athletes in Tokyo this summer. First released in black and fluorescent orange, the Adidas 4DFWD will be available to Creators Club members on May 15. The Tokyo collection colourway will be available from July 1, before a worldwide launch from August 12.
